A little about Ms. Katie (Katelyn) Rohrer

I grew up in the desert farm fields of Arizona rescuing and training horses and found my passion for psychology after working at a baseball training facility.  After completing a bachelors in sports and performance psychology and a masters in psychology, I moved to be with my partner in Colorado where I worked as a para-principal and a registered behavior technician. It soon became clear to me how much I enjoyed helping people and after starting my journey to be a licensed counselor, we officially settled here in Manhattan where I now work at my DREAM JOB!!!!

My day to day interactions with members and staff include behavior management, creating and implementing emergency mental health protocols, mental health training as a MHFT trainer, community awareness and parent support, and staff training and guidance for the many psychological aspects that go into running a safe, and positive environment.

What makes BGC special?

I love seeing the different aspects of Boys & Girls Club working together to make a difference in our community. Meeting our parents and interacting with our members everyday while helping to design new programs to support both is the highlight of my day. I also really love meeting staff that share my passion for mental health and share a similar dream of building others up to be the best version of themselves. To see how we have come together under one organization that supported building our own skills is also incredible and makes me appreciate the Boys & Girls Club of Manhattan even more.

What do you like to do when not at work?

When I am not working I like to decompress and garden, take our three rescue dogs on hikes, try cooking new recipes, and visit any and all historic locations. Beyond these hobbies I enjoy catching up on research and homework for my clinical mental health counseling masters and my graduate certificate in equine assisted therapy. My dreams include owning a rescue farm where I can practice therapy in an outdoor setting, and supporting my significant other in his life long career as an Army pilot.

What's your "Superpower"?

I would say being able to work alongside anyone and help them achieve their dreams is a superpower I hope to achieve. By actively listening so others feel heard, empowered, and comfortable to have tough conversations, I can inspire others to start a process of change, and I have always been the "go to" person for advice. Lastly, I'd like to be a superhero who teaches others to learn something new everyday and to always find something to smile about.

What's your favorite BGC Kid quote?

“I like your smile, you make me want to smile too"

On my first day at a new site I was warmly greeted by a young member and invited to eat snacks with them after they learned I was a new employee. I was given a spontaneous sign language lesson over snacks and it made me feel very welcomed!

What do you hope our members take away from being a BGClub Manhattan member?

I want our members to grow up knowing they truly matter in this world and to have positive experiences from the Boys & Girls Club Manhattan to look back on. I want our members to take away memories and moments that inspire them to improve the world, not take away from it. We as staff at the BGClub MHK are helping to raise our future leaders and it starts by providing a positive outlook on life, boosting their self esteem, building up self confidence, and teaching ways to endure and excel. We all are special and unique, and we should never stop learning!
